The chef has incredible talent! We couldn't decide what to try - everything on the menu looked so interesting and delicious - but eventually settled on the pheasant and scallops. Utterly divine! I would go back to Sidmouth just to see what witchcraft these geniuses have concocted next!

Excellent local pub serving good food and drinks. The food here isn't the usual pub fayre. We had braised steak which was to die for. Bar staff were really friendly. Suggested to book as they are always busy.

We had a fantastic Sunday roast for a group of 18, and I couldn’t be more impressed! The service was exceptional – the staff were friendly, attentive, and went above and beyond to accommodate various allergies in our group. They made sure everyone had a safe and enjoyable experience, which we really appreciated. The food was simply amazing – perfectly cooked meats, crispy roast potatoes, fresh seasonal vegetables, and delicious gravy. Everything was served piping hot and full of flavor. It was a memorable meal, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a top-notch Sunday roast.

Weekend in Sidmouth to celebrate our birthdays. On a beautiful sunny afternoon we started with drinks at the Marine...on the sea front just 50m from the sea. A lovely bar, great drinks and a superb barman. We then wandered along to the Volunteer..a local pub that has a reputation for great local produce that changes regularly. It's a lovely cosy pub, with a very relaxed vibe. The menu is on two chalk boards and you order at the bar. We started with the scotch eggs and the bang bang cauliflower...both were delicious. Then I went for the local award winning sausages with mash, hubby for the butter roasted halibut. Mine was absolutely delicious...his..sadly the halibut was slightly overcooked and dry. We finished by sharing a jam Roly poly... something Ive not had since I was a kid. It was tasty but slightly too dry. Overall I would recommend a visit here...the staff were wonderful and it is a gem for Sidmouth

This place has changed so much recently and massively for the better. Great bar team that are knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. The menu is the biggest change - its amazing. Definitely not the usual pub grub fare. Outside space is lovely too. Highly recommended

Have eaten here twice now. Both times we were there as a party of 8 with 4 children, who can sometimes be difficult to find suitable meals for. No such problem at the Volley. The food, service and atmosphere are first class. The fresh seafood dishes are a match for any dedicated speciality seafood restaurant. Take good quality restaurant food and place it in a small homely pub atmosphere with a good selection of beers and you have the perfect recipe for an eatery that will ensure plenty of satisfied customers and lots of repeat business. Stocking gluten free beer was the icing on the cake as not all pubs in Sidmouth offer this.

Great food in a friendly atmosphere. The fish pie was excellent containing plenty of fish and a lovey mash potato topping. Portion size was very good. Definitely better than your average pub meal, would highly recommend.

We met up with our dear friends, This pub is a stone's throw from where they live. We have driven by this pub hundreds of times but never been in. The food and mood are very, very welcoming. We had slow cooked brisket of beef, absolutely beautiful. The cauliflower cheese is just great. Five stars all round. Thank you to all at the volunteer Sidmouth for a wonderful meal.

Came here for a meal on my own and had ‘The Boxing Day Burger’ it was something a little different with chicken, a beef burger, cheese, cranberry sauce and pigs in blankets. It was honestly incredible, no extra seasoning needed. Staff was nice with great service and good beer. Highly recommend
